Denver is a nice city to live in. It's the largest city in the region, with a population of about 500,000 in the city itself, and around 2 million in the 5-county metro area around it. This makes it large enough to support many cultural and artistic facilities such as theaters and museums and a great symphony orchestra and opera. and yet small enough to not feel overwhelming.
The climate here is great. Although most people seem to think of snow covered mountains when the think of Colorado, Denver is next to the Rockies, on the high plains, where we get over 300 days of sunshine a year. Our winters are quite mild, with most of our snow coming in March and April. Summers here rarely see temperatures above the high 80's, with just enough rain to keep things nice and green.
Denver has a large and active gay community. Last June, over 100,000 people took part in PrideFest 2000, and over 100 contingents marched in the Pride Parade. (Source: Quest Magazine) We also have one of the oldest and largest bear clubs in the country. (See our Bear page.
We live near the center of the city, in a charming old neighborhood called Capital Hill. The state capital building sits about 5 blocks away from us. This is a neighborhood of very nice old brick homes, as this used to be the most desirable area of town. In fact, our street is part of what once was known as "Millionaire's Row". The house of the famous "Unsinkable" Molly Brown is two blocks north of us. Our building is a bit unusual for the area, however. It's a 20 story highrise, about 30 years old. It was one of the first modern highrise residences built in Denver. We live on the 17th floor, with a sweeping view of both the city and the mountains. We really love it here.
Here's the view from our balcony.
