Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park

As Major General William T. Sherman advanced towards Atlanta in June of 1864, he was stalled at Kennesaw Mountain by Confederates led by General Joseph E. Johnston. A stalemate caused Sherman to attack Cheatam Hill and Pigeon Hill, which he felt were vulnerable. Sherman failed, causing him to revert to his previously successful flanking maneuvers.

44,000 Confederate soldiers, led by General Albert S. Johnston took Major General Ulysses S. Grant's forces by surprise in early April of 1862. Thirteen hours of bloodshed on April 6 included the death of General Johnston. Grant was reinforced that night with the arrival of the Army of the Ohio, and a brutal counter-attack on April 7 prevented a possible shift in the balance of power to the Confederacy.
